duBois, Thomas (b. 1957). You Surely Shall Not Die! (2012).

In Genesis 3, the Holy Spirit records a key historical event that is critical to your spiritual life. In the form of a serpent, Satan appeared to Eve in the Garden of Eden (Genesis 3:1–7). The two pictures on these pages show the key event in this Scripture account. Satan had one goal: to get Eve to doubt. This is God’s lesson for you today: The evil one does not hit you head-on and say, “God did not say this.” Rather, Satan works slowly to get you to doubt, as he plans to destroy your faith.

THE TWO PICTURES of eve ARE A MIRROR OF YOUR RELIGIOUS LIFE AND YOUR DAILY SPIRITUAL STRUGGLE!

Many consider the biblical account of Satan’s tempting Eve to be a myth. Even those who believe that Eve’s temptation actually took place see the event as having little value to their own life. The opposite is true! As shown by the illustrations on this page, in situations where God’s living Word is most critical, Satan still comes to tempt you, EXACTLY AS HE TEMPTED EVE IN THE GARDEN! What is happening on this page shows what happens in your life every day! Heads up!

LOOK AT ILLUSTRATION A—“DID GOD REALLY SAY?”

When babies or adults are baptized, the devil may come to you as he did to Eve and say: “But God did not actually say that Baptism can save you. Baptism is no more than a ceremony or an ordinance!” Wrong! Read in your Bible what the Holy Spirit teaches. Through God’s miracle of Baptism, the Holy Spirit says you are “sanctified and justified” (1 Corinthians 6:11). “Baptism now saves you” (1 Peter 3:21).

LOOK AT ILLUSTRATIOINB—“DID GOD REALLY SAY?”

When you go to Holy Communion, the devil may tempt you—as he did Eve—to doubt God’s Word and say to you: “But God does not really say that Communion gives you forgiveness of sins.” Satan is wrong! God states clearly: “Take and drink, this cup is the New Testament in My blood . . . which is poured out for [you] for forgiveness of sins” (Matthew 26:28).

LOOK AT ILLUSTRATION C—“DID GOD REALLY SAY?”

When the pastor announces the forgiveness of sins in Absolution of those who confess their sins, the devil may come to you—as he did to Eve—and say: “No man can forgive sins. Only God can forgive sins.” Satan is wrong! The Holy Spirit records evidence in the Scripture that Jesus not only permits, but actually commands, those whom He calls to forgive sins in His name (John 20:21–23).

LOOK AT ILLUSTRATION D—“DID GOD REALLY SAY?”

When pastors and evangelists preach, the devil comes to many and says to them: “The pastor may be eloquent, but God does not say that the preacher’s words are anything different from, or more helpful to you, than the words of a therapist, or a promoter of positive thinking.” Wrong! The Holy Spirit says God’s Words are “living and active.” Jesus says His Words are living (John 6:63). This is also true for the Words of your pastor. Jesus says to His pastors as He did to His disciples: “As the Father has sent Me, so I also send you” (John 20:21). Jesus says again to them: “The one who listens to you listens to Me” (Luke 10:16).

Never forget the historical event recorded in Scripture, as shown on this page. Satan hourly tries to attack God’s Word. Satan makes these attacks in your mind, and especially in your thinking about spiritual matters. Always keep this in mind when you consider the various and different official teachings of different denominations.

Dear Lord Jesus, plant into my heart the seed of Your Word. From this seed of Your Word will grow Your gift of faith. The fruit of this gift of faith is to believe Your Word and promises, even when Satan tempts me otherwise. The fruit of Your living Word is also the power and strength to daily defend against Satan. O Lord, plant Your seed of Faith deep within my heart. Amen.
