Jesus says: “For from within, out of the heart of men, proceed the evil thoughts, fornications, thefts, murders, adulteries, deeds of coveting and wickedness, as well as deceit, sensuality, envy, slander, pride and foolishness” (Mark 7:21–22).

God Has a Divine Medication for Your Inner Disease of Sin

Look at the picture on the left. Upon seeing the red spots on this man’s back and arm, most people would conclude that these red areas are some type of rash or “outer” skin disease. Surprise! These red spots on this man’s back are indeed “outer” indications of disease, but not of an outer disease. Rather, these outer spots reveal an inner disease: HIV/AIDS! The outer red spots indicate that the incurable and deadly disease of AIDS is deeply rooted, working deep within the inner part of this man’s body!

THE SPIRITUAL MISTAKE MOST PEOPLE MAKE

Most people are similarly mistaken about the spiritual disease of Sin. Most people believe Sin is merely a series of daily mistakes, bad judgments, and failures. God defines “Sin” otherwise. God says your endless mistakes and failures—your “outer” offenses against God, family, and friends—do not come from your failure to live a holy life. Rather, in His Scriptures, God says your daily mistakes and failures are due to a deep, deadly, inner disease God calls “Sin,” a kind of spiritual HIV/AIDS.
In these pages of GOOD NEWS, you will read the definition of Sin, not as man describes Sin, but as God defines Sin in His Scriptures. God’s definition of Sin may initially frighten you. However, God does not just give you bad news about the reality of Sin; He also gives you good news: Your spiritual affliction of Sin is incurable in this life, but it is controllable through Christ, as outlined in Romans 6:6–23.

Note carefully as Jesus gives you the clearest and most vivid definition of Sin, as illustrated in the upper right. This deadly spiritual disease which now afflicts you, Jesus describes: “For from within, out of the heart of men, proceed the evil thoughts, fornications, thefts, murders, adulteries, deeds of coveting and wickedness, as well as deceit, sensuality, envy, slander, pride and foolishness” (Mark 7:21–22).

THERE IS GOOD NEWS FOR YOU!

The Holy Spirit does indeed teach that the deadly disease of Sin is a living power now rampant within you, seeking to enslave your heart and mind (Romans 6:6–23). But the Spirit also gives you this Good News: All who are “connected” to Jesus are like a vine and branch (John 15:5). They are “grafted,” or “united” to Christ and live in Christ and He lives in them (John 14:17, 23; 15:5). Through this “uniting” in Baptism (John 6:3–5), Jesus becomes your divine Medicine to fight the spiritual disease of Sin. How do you know this divine Medication will ensure that the power of Sin will never enslave you? The Holy Spirit promises you: “Greater is He who is in you than he who is in the world” (1 John 4:4).
Because the Holy Spirit’s teaching of the power of Sin is one of the most important biblical teachings, meditate daily on His teachings. Focus especially on Romans 6, which tells how God begins your divine treatment against the power of Sin when He “unites” you to Christ through His miracle of Baptism (Romans 6:3–5). Then upon being baptized and every day thereafter, Christ lives daily and hourly within you, subduing the power of Sin. This battle continues throughout your earthly life and culminates when Christ raises you to life eternal—when Sin will be completely destroyed. On the next page, you learn more of the Spirit’s teaching.

Dear Lord Jesus, thank You for being my divine Physician and giving me Your honest diagnosis of my spiritual condition. Most of all, thank You for being my divine Medicine to ensure that, even though the deadly power of Sin within me seeks to slay me, You live within me every minute to make absolutely certain the devil and the power of Sin will not overtake me, enslave me, and destroy me eternally. Thank You, Lord Jesus! Amen.…
