What Jesus SPOKE . . . Occurred Instantly!

The previous two pages show God speaking/breathing His Word and Spirit—and a miracle takes place instantly. The pictures on this page show Jesus speaking His living Word—and miracles ALSO taking place—instantly!

Of all the miracles displayed on this page, the one to the immediate left is the most important to you. Why? As He explains why He performed this specific miracle, Jesus also assures you of His power to forgive you all your sins. The following is the explanation of this key miracle and THE MIRACLE JESUS’ LIVING WORD BRINGS TO YOU EACH DAY.

As shown on the left, friends brought a paralytic to Jesus for healing (Matthew 9:1–8; Luke 5:17–26). Jesus said: “Your sins are forgiven you.” The Pharisees were instantly angry! Basing their thinking not on God’s Word, but upon reason, the Pharisees said, “Who is this man who speaks blasphemies? Who can forgive sins, but God alone?” Jesus responded: “Which is easier to say, ‘Your sins have been forgiven you,’ or to say, ‘Rise and walk’?” (Luke 5:20–23).

Both healing and forgiving would require a miracle of God. However, those who refused to recognize Jesus’ divinity concluded that it was obviously easier for Jesus to claim power to forgive sins. Why? Because it could not be visually confirmed whether or not Jesus had the divine power to forgive sins. The Pharisees thought they had trapped Jesus. Surprise! Jesus performed a public display of a divine healing—and this healing COULD BE visually VERIFIED! Through this miracle, the Spirit was publicly defining the nature and power of God’s living Word. The Scriptures state that Jesus said: “‘But in order that you may know that the Son of Man has authority on earth to forgive sins’—then He said to the paralytic—‘Rise, take up your bed, and go home.’ And he rose, and went home. But when the multitudes saw this, they were filled with awe, and glorified God, who had given such authority to men” (Matthew 9:6–8). By performing a visible miracle, Jesus confirmed His divine authority to perform an invisible miracle: forgiving sin. This is also good news for you today!

This example may help. A doctor tells his patient: “You have a fatal disease. I have an inoculation that will kill the disease.” Because the patient cannot see or visibly confirm the doctor’s claim that the inoculation can kill the germs of the fatal disease, the patient expresses his doubts and requests visible proof. The doctor places the germ of the disease under a microscope and adds the medicine. The medicine destroys the germs. The patient is now convinced of the outcome of the doctor’s promise, even though he cannot see what the doctor sees. In a somewhat similar way, Jesus said to the crowds: “To assure you that I have the authority to forgive sins, something you cannot see, I will do a miracle of healing, something you can verify with your eyes.”

Jesus’ Words, “Your sins are forgiven” (Matthew 9:2b), are THE MOST PRECIOUS words OF ASSURANCE THE HOLY SPIRIT DESIRES TO GIVE YOU. What Jesus says happens, whether or not we see, hear, or feel the results. It is all about God’s promises in His living and all-powerful Word, as He Himself defines His Word.

Dear Lord Jesus, thank You for Your miracle of the healing of the paralytic. Through Your teaching of this miracle, I have the blessed assurance that You daily forgive me all my sins by the power of Your living Word. Amen.…
