“God Spoke, and It Was Done!” Psalm 33:9

GOD’S OWN DEFINITION OF HIS “WORD”

John wrote the first words of his Gospel—which refer to the Word—“In the beginning was the WORD” (John 1:1). This is an unmistakable reference to Jesus Christ—Who is God’s final WORD to man. Following his opening statement, St. John stated these words: “The WORD became flesh and lived for awhile among us” (John 1:14).

This issue of GOOD NEWS begins the same way. GOOD NEWS recognizes Jesus Christ as the living Word—the center of the entire Scriptures, the One to Whom all Scriptures point (Luke 24:27, 44).

God the Holy Spirit further decisively defines God’s WORD in the Holy Scriptures by comparing it to man’s word. The Holy Spirit says, “You accepted it [God’s Word] not as the word of men, but for what it really is, the Word of God, WHICH ALSO PERFORMS ITS WORK IN YOU WHO BELIEVE” (1 Thessalonians 2:13). Here the Spirit specifically states that the words that come out of your mouth are dead, as compared to God’s Word, which is “living and active” (Hebrews 4:12). Understanding this key teaching of the Spirit—the difference between your word and God’s Word—will totally change your life!

This difference between man’s word and God’s Word may better be understood by the illustration on the opposite page. This illustration shows how, at creation, God spoke His living Word and breathed His Spirit (Psalm 33:6–9), saying, “Let there be light” (Genesis 1:3). Even though there was no one to hear and carry out God’s command, the light appeared INSTANTLY! God “spoke, and it was done; He commanded, and it stood fast” (Psalm 33:9).

You might exclaim: “Amazing! With no one around to carry out God’s command, how could this happen?” ANSWER: THE VERY WORD THAT GOD SPOKE—HIS LIVING WORD—CARRIED OUT AND COMPLETED GOD’S COMMAND. He commanded, and light shone forth! No human words can do such miracles! When God speaks His living Word, His Word always accomplishes what His Word says. “So shall My Word be which goes forth from My mouth; it shall not return to Me empty, without accomplishing what I desire, and without succeeding in the matter for which I sent it” (Isaiah 55:11).

GOOD NEWS FOR YOU!

Here is more and even greater good news for you! Your heavenly Father and Jesus Christ are still speaking and breathing their living Word to perform miracles throughout the world today! Jesus says, “My Father is working until now, and I Myself am working” (John 5:17).

On the next page, you will see how, just as the Father spoke living and miracle-creating Words at creation, so also Jesus spoke similar living and miracle-producing Words during His public ministry. Here is more Good News for you: Jesus has appointed special representatives through whom He regularly speaks to you His living Word. This living Word gives and assures you of full and total forgiveness for all your sins, a strength to overcome frustrations in your life, and a living and eternal hope! (1 Peter 1:3).

The space on these pages does not permit us to explain the Holy Spirit’s entire teaching of God’s Word. You can find a more extensive definition of how God uses His living Word to bless you—based entirely on Scripture—in the Bible Study click here..
Dear heavenly Father, bless me as I read and study Your definition—Your Spirit’s explanation—of Your living Word. Teach me how Your living Word can bring me forgiveness, strength for each day, and a solid hope both for this life and for eternity. Amen.…
